An evening of Mozart and Martines
Join Thames Philharmonic Choir, the Beaufoy Sinfonia and a team of exciting young soloists at Cadogan Hall for what is sure to be a thrilling evening of music-making.
For its annual visit to Cadogan Hall on Saturday 22 March at 7.30pm, Thames Philharmonic Choir will pair the music of Mozart with that of his contemporary, Marianna Martines.
Programme
The main work will be Mozart’s Requiem, undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and memorable oratorio works ever written, or nearly written as the case may be. Mozart famously died during the composition process (although the work was latterly completed by a variety of other composers) and the spirit of the dying man lives through this work: brilliant, vivacious, at peace yet fearful of what was to come.
The Requiem is paired with a less well-known but wonderfully buoyant setting of Dixit Dominus by Marianna Martines, an eminent contemporary of Mozart’s with whom he often played piano duets at parties. The programme is rounded off with Mozart’s spirited settings of the Marian antiphon Regina Caeli and Divertimento in D for strings.
Thames Philharmonic Choir
Thames Philharmonic Choir is a vibrant and musically ambitious amateur choir based in South West London. With a repertoire spanning over 800 years, the Choir enjoys performing everything from renaissance polyphony to contemporary compositions and everything else in between. We perform with some of the country’s finest oratorio soloists, orchestras and period instrumental ensembles, both locally and in prestigious London venues. Rehearsals are high energy, high pace and designed to improve vocal technique, expand musical horizons and to share in the joy of communal music making.
The choir is committed to developing young singers and musicians and, in 2021, established the inaugural Choral Scholarship Programme to support aspiring young singers with their choral training. As well as being section leaders for the Choir, the scholars often take step-out solo roles in concerts.
The choir will be joined for this concert by the excellent instrumental ensemble, the Beaufoy Sinfonia, many of whose players are recent graduates of the major London conservatories, and are often to be found within the ranks of the UK’s leading orchestras. The team of exciting young soloists includes Ellen Mawhinney (soprano), Mercè Bruguera Abelló (mezzo soprano), Philippe Durrant (tenor), and Johannes Moore (bass), together with this year’s cohort of TPC Scholars.
The programme will be conducted by Harry Bradford, a prize-winning conductor and choral director working in the UK and Europe. Since winning Second Prize in the prestigious Eric Ericson Award 2021, he has collaborated with a number of the world’s finest vocal ensembles including the MDR Rundfunkchor, the Eric Ericsons Kammarkör, the Sixteen and the Swedish Radio Choir. He is the conductor and co-founder of the professional vocal ensemble, Recordare, with whom he has performed extensively across festivals in the UK. He is Music Director of Thames Philharmonic Choir and holds similar positions with the English Baroque Choir and North Herts Guild of Singers.
